About the Artist

Why I paint. . .

Ed Zorensky - Biography

I paint in oil, egg tempera or gouache—pictures of everyday creatures, places and people swimming in light. I see each image as an ode to a present moment. I grew up in a house full of books and art, but with little said about how to make them or why. So I wrote and painted to find out. From a young age I was addicted to putting words and images on paper. Why?  Because the process always revealed what was true or beautiful. And like the poet John Keats said, 'All the rest is noise.' In college I majored in English and minored in art: words and images. Intent on capturing light in ‘plein air,’ I chased it with a view camera across southern Maine and the Piedmont hills of North Carolina. I moved to Colorado for a graduate degree in Creative Writing, and spent my free time in the art department, learning life drawing and intaglio printmaking. Over the next decades I wrote professionally for print, radio, and TV. . . and I painted. Gradually I learned to shape pigment on canvas into an illusion of light moving through space. And I began to place work in galleries and private collections. Having lived most of my life in the West, I spend part of each summer in southern Maine. Whether the subject is a metal rowboat on a lakeside embankment, or two women talking on a High-Country portal, my intent is always the same: to create an image that moves beyond word and thought to a felt sense of moment. Thanks for looking.
